Horse Falls into Sinkhole in Minnesota

A horse falls into a sinkhole in Minnesota.
Sinkholes can pose a major hazard to people, vehicles, homes and evidently animals as well. Recently, the Wrenshall Fire and Rescue Squad in Minnesota responded to a distress call concerning a horse that had basically fallen into the ground. Melissa Aurand had been riding the animal, named Stormy.
Mrs. Aurand was thrown off of the creature during its descent into the ground. Zach jumped into the hole to calm the animal, while Melissa called 911.
Rescue workers claimed the sinkhole was between 9 and 10 feet deep. They shoveled the dirt around the edges and obtained a ramp. Eventually Zach and Stormy were able to climb out without any serious injuries.
Sinkholes are caused when acids in underground water slowly dissolve the limestone bedrock underneath the surface of the ground, leaving a network of holes. If these depressions are too close to the surface, or grow in size, the top layers can suddenly collapse.
