North Korea fired several gunshots this morning at a South Korean guard post along the border,... hitting it, and prompting the South Korean military to fire back warning shots.
The South Korean military is still investigating why the shots were fired... but it says it's unlikely to have been a deliberate provocation.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
North Korea fired at least four rounds on Sunday at around 7:41 AM, hitting a South Korean guard post in the Demilitarized Zone in Cheorwon county.
South Korea's Joint Chief of Staff said there was no damage sustained by South Korean personnel or facilities.
In accordance with protocol, the South Korean military responded by twice firing around ten warning shots... and broadcasting a warning... that urged the North to refrain from further provocations.
A military official said the North's move is a violation of the 2018 inter-Korean Comprehensive Military Agreement to refrain from engaging in provocative military acts along the border.
This marks the first violation of the agreement involving a DMZ guard post.
The South Korean military is investigating North Korea's motive... and analyzing the rounds that were fired.
A military official said about two hours after the North fired the shots... South Korea sent a statement through the inter-Korean military communication line... demanding an explanation.
So far, the North has not responded.
A South Korean military official sees the likelihood of a deliberate provocation by the North as low... considering various factors that conditions such as visibility were not suitable at the time for such a provocation.
The official did not rule out the possibility of a misfire by the North... considering that North Korean military guards usually conduct firearm inspections at that time of day after changing shifts.
