Homestead Work ~ Garden Harvest ~ Logging Forest
  • 8 years ago
Our garden is actually starting to grow better now that the weather is cooling down some. We are cleaning up the off grid homestead and preparing fire wood for winter.

Our garden suffered all summer in the intense heat and lack of rain. Most of our tomato plants died. The pepper plants did not really do anything at all. The cold weather plants all died out or just stagnated.

But now our garden is starting to grow nicely. The weather is a bit cooler. We went from near 100 degree temperatures for the past three months to the 80s by day and 50-60s at night. This is such a relief for us and the garden.

Our plants are really taking off now. The pepper plants are growing tall and good. The tomatoes that survived are taking off. Even the lettuce, spinach and swiss chard is starting to grow now. We hope to continue eating from our garden until the first snow.

Chris and I are still cutting trees and stacking logs to clear the side of the woods by the meadow. We are hoping to expand the area that we have to use here from about 2 acres to 3.5 acres. This will allow us to grow more food next year. And it will provide more space for the animals.

But most importantly we have to clear out the trees so that the sun can shine on our solar panels all day instead of just two hours per day. The trees have been blocking our solar panels and have to go.

Melanie washed clothes and drained the main water tank to nothing so I had to switch over to the second tank. For now that tank is not connected to the tiny house plumbing because it is all warped out of shape. I want to empty that tank and move put another tank in its place. Then I will connect it to the plumbing to give us a total of 550 gallons of rain water supply for the off grid tiny house on wheels.

We also have room to expand the water tanks to the outside of the water storage shed and provide us with more water capacity for the summer months. The shed will be fully enclosed, insulated and heated before winter in order to keep our water supply and off grid battery banks warm.

After we finished clearing out all the downed trees and moving the logs out of the way, we took stock of our T posts that we will be using to make the new chicken run. We hope to have a large enough chicken area to let them free range for their own food. But the still need protection from predators. So we are making a very large chicken run.

Later we went to TSC for some more T posts. It was well after dark before we finished for the night.
