Dal Makhani - Punjabi Main Course Recipe - Masala Trails With Smita Deo

Dal Makhani is a popular dish originating from Punjab. It is a mixed lentil curry generally made with lots of butter and cream and is absolutely delicious, best served with steamed rice and hot parathas!

Ingredients
2 cups of whole black lentil or black urad dal soaked overnight
5 onions finely chopped
6 tomatoes blanched and pureed
1 cup of salted butter (Amul)
1 cup cream
1½ tbsp deghi mirchi powder
5 tbsp ghee
2 tbsp ginger and garlic each finely chopped
1 tsp Punjabi garam masala

METHOD:
Pressure cook the dal for 3 whistles and then put the flame on a low and allow it to cook for 20 minutes

Heat the ghee and add the onions and sauté them golden. Then add the ginger and the garlic and sauté till the raw smell goes off

Then add the chilli powder and the tomatoes and go on sautéing till the oil oozes out

Then add the boiled dal, salt and mix well

Add the butter and cook on a low flame for 45 min or till it the lentil leaves its starch completely and the dal becomes thick

Sprinkle the garam masala, add the cream and mix well and remove from flame and serve
